📞 Community Check-In: Would You Join a Midnight Pretenders Club Call?
One thing we’ve been talking about lately is finding more ways to connect the club outside of comments, posts, and DMs.
So here’s the question:
If we hosted a community-wide voice call, would you join?
Not a boring business meeting. More like everyone hopping in, talking cars, projects, upcoming events, road trips, industry news, life updates, and just putting voices to names.
We have members from all over the country, and while the app has done an awesome job connecting people, there’s something different about actually hearing the people you’re building relationships with.
I would definitely, would love to see family members here.
Idk if it’s an option, but as a gamer I use Discord for communities outside of cars. That’s how we connect.
Could be something to use just for the community that’s free, can be private and public if set up properly, and can host calls/video chats 24/7. Could be a quick way for people to get help from one another.
I’d say Facebook but cause the algorithm, I never see anything from groups in in unless I go to look for them.
What’s one thing you genuinely miss about the older automotive scene?
Not the cars themselves necessarily, but the feeling around it.
Lately it feels like everything has turned into a competition for attention instead of appreciation. People building cars for engagement instead of building something that actually makes them happy. Every meet turns into rev battles, takeover clips, ego contests, or people trying to prove who spent the most money.
Meanwhile some of the coolest builds we’ve ever seen were held together by zip ties, late nights, scraped knuckles, and a vision nobody else understood yet.
That’s honestly a huge reason Midnight Pretenders exists in the first place. We wanted to build a space where:
— People can ask questions without getting clowned
Being able to have a full on car conversation. I love chatting all things car but more and more often it seems like the second I ask a technical mechanical question it’s met with blank stares. It’s that, “I’m not sure what you’re talking about, I just paid the guy who did the work” look. There are still PLENTY of built not bought folks everywhere I go but the number of people who don’t know why the decided to go with a closed vs open deck block or why they went titanium vs steel valve springs is definitely growing.
It’s started as 1997 Honda Odyssey, my family had this since 2014 gifted from our grandpa, driven everywhere until it broke down and set backyard 2 years, goats been jumping on top of Odyssey, lots of spiders webs, snakes lived there and more creatures, until 2019 on New Year’s Eve, my friend and I were bored had nothing to do, then I had idea to start up Odyssey, so we charged the battery, add new fuel, topped up oil and it started up right away, the first thing we did was remove muffler 😂 oh boi that thing was rowdy. Few weeks went by, I decided to fix it up for my first car when I was only 16. First thing we did was fix the problems and maintenance the who Odyssey and get registered. Few months went by, painted whole odyssey red using rattle can paint, got cold air…
Dude this is EXACTLY the kind of story that makes people fall in love with car culture again.
Not because it’s the fastest thing on earth or because it cost a million dollars, but because there’s actual life behind it. The whole image of this abandoned Odyssey sitting with goats climbing on it and then you randomly deciding “yeah let’s bring this thing back” on New Year’s Eve is legendary already 😂
And honestly the fact you and your dad rebuilt the motor AND manual swapped it makes it so much cooler. That’s the stuff people remember forever. Most people would’ve sent that van straight to a junkyard and never thought twice about it.
Also the part where you said the best thing about shows was seeing other people smile at the build… that says a lot honestly. That’s the side of the scene that matters way more than trophies or internet points.

Oh man, I just want to vent into the void without my job seeing it. But man the only reason I’m still here is cause it pays the bills right now. Working for a dealership is rough. Wish I could get into aftermarket parts instead or anything performance.
The burn out here has been the biggest reason I lose motivation to work on my own car. But here I am tonight slaving over my motor after a 10 hour shift..
Send Dr Pepper and head gaskets please. Ya girl needs it today.
Yeah that makes sense… dealership life’ll burn you out quick.
I know that feeling of coming home smoked and still staring at your own car like “alright… let’s do this anyway.” It’s rough, but also kinda the part that keeps you in it.
Lowkey though, getting out of that environment and into something more performance-based would probably bring that motivation back a bit. Different pace, different kind of work.
And yeah… Dr Pepper and head gaskets is a whole mood 😂
Short story, I had a company reach out to me about a potential sponsorship with them. Still waiting on the details but it’s been making me think about selling the 240sx and look for a Forester to build next. Weighing out everything at this point. I love a chassis but Subaru has been my thing for years now. Forester would had been my choice but I got the 240 for a deal I couldn’t say no to… idk thinking too much in my garage
I mean, I would say at this point what ever speaks to you the most. And if said companies gonna help pay for parts, then I mean, it’s a no-brainer😂
Feeling like a rare wild Pokemon over here 😩 I swear, I exist and I love interacting with people. I’ll work on being more active.
Getting ready for a meet this Sunday in Newport News VA! Been needing to do a deep clean on the car so I’ll be spending time doing some yellow light repair and clay bar the car all day on Saturday. Maybe get my new flag up in the garage.
Hope everyone has been doing great with the weather warming up!! What’s everyone got planned?!
That’s the best part about this, though, we wanted it to hang loose just like this you’re here when you can be here let’s be honest. We’re all adults.
Name one car everyone seems to love… but you just don’t get the hype.
No hate — just opinions.
This should be interesting 👀 ⬇️
Recently had someone give me grief because my canards are “on backwards”. Yes, they technically are but I did so on purpose because in my opinion they have a sleeker look like this. I doubt these have much effect on overall downforce anyway but what is your opinion? Install by the book or customize to fit the build?
Let’s hear some car confessions.
What’s a car you used to hate… but now you actually respect?
Could be a platform, a brand, or a style.
Sometimes the more you learn about cars, the more your opinion changes.
What car changed your mind over time? ⬇️
Let’s see some honesty.
What’s a trend in the car community you think will disappear in a few years?
Could be:
• Certain wheel styles
• Widebody overload
• Fake carbon fiber
Does anyone else have this same problem? I’m supposed to be saving money for my retune. Every time I say I’ve bought the last round of parts to start the next phase of my build and it’s time to start saving for the tune I end up buying more parts 😬. Recently it was dual radium catch cans because my tuner recommended it so of course buy it. Then new pitch stop mount because it’ll be easy to access when the tmic is out. Then front and rear bumpers because mine have minor damage and it’s been bothering me since I bought my car. Realistically not necessary but my ocd says do it already so I did. Then I bought the Billetworkz short throw shifter kit, Overtake clutch delay delete, and new bride shifter and e-brake boots since when I do all the upcoming upgrades these things will be easily accessible…
I’m about to do it again guys…. Someone please help me lol. Seriously any Subi peeps want to chime in please do. So I just hit 70K on my 2020 wrx (fa20dit) and have never done a walnut blasting to clean the valves. I’m wanting to do this before I get it tuned. Now since I have to remove the intake manifold to do this should I also do a tgv and egr delete? I’m already needing a tune for the upgrades soon to come and making the switch from tuning with a Cobb AP to Ecutek so issues with post green speed changes and the Cobb limitations are not an issue. It’ll cost me about $200 and can probably get me an extra 15-25 hp supposedly. Is it worth it, what do you guys think? I feel like I should just do it, but again I may have a slight problem over here lol.

The NSX! My dream car!
What’s one thing in the car scene that needs to change — and one thing that should never change?
Is it:
• The ego?
• The takeover vs. track debate?
• Social media validation?
• Gatekeeping builds?
Great question and definitely a complex one to answer but here’s my two cents.
In the tuning scene, the two biggest focal points for evolution and preservation are the takeover vs. track debate and the core philosophy of craftsmanship.
The most critical shift required is moving away from street takeovers and back toward structured, safe environments like the track and sanctioned events/meets. Takeovers have led to severe crackdowns, including new laws allowing for vehicle seizures and impoundment for both participants and spectators.
These events are widely seen by the public as "terrorizing" towns and risking lives, which creates a negative stigma that threatens the entire car community. When I was growing up and getting into the scene even the street racing was done with more respect and consideration. We went to places far from traffic and away from residential areas where the noise at night is obviously a disturbance to people who have families or just sleep early because they work in the morning. Even when we raced on the highway we waited till after midnight when traffic was minimal and when we did get around regular traffic we would ease up. Us enthusiasts need to advocate for a return to the track, where the focus is on driving skill and technical precision rather than reckless behavior. Illegal gatherings will never disappear but we need to show the kids there’s a right way and wrong way to do things and if we’re going to be doing things we probably shouldn’t be doing then let’s do it the best possible way we can. With respect, decency, and not putting bystanders at risk.
What Should Never Change? The Philosophy of Craftsmanship!
The heart of JDM culture imo is the obsession with individual expression and technical perfection I think it’s what defines the scene and should be preserved at all costs. Innovation and personalization. The art of creating a unique build through custom fabrication as opposed to cookie cutter builds all using the same trending bolt on parts. Even when just buying bolt on parts and having no custom work done I at least make it a point to avoid just buying all the same stuff I see on every other car so my car doesn’t just look and sound exactly like everything else on the road and at meets/shows.
Mechanical soul! Despite the rise of modern day laptops on wheels, we need to keep the community's love and knowledge for raw, mechanical machines alive. Digital is cool but analog feels better and has more soul and gives a greater connection to our machines. Knowing how to rebuild carburetors and reading spark plugs to know how to change jetting and manually turning distributors or removing mechanical/vacuum advancers to change timing was the original way of tuning and we can’t let these things just be lost to time!
As far as things like ego and gatekeeping it’s something we can’t be rid of and comes with its pros and cons. Ego fuels competition and should be used to help us keep pushing each other to get better to keep advancing and pushing the limits of what is possible. Not to look down on others who haven’t gotten to where we are yet. Similarly gatekeepers are necessary. Veteran enthusiasts need to do their part to preserve the culture. However instead of looking down on those doing things the wrong way let’s teach them the right way so we can keep the culture alive and growing! We also have to embrace new technology and not be too stuck in our old ways because it helps us advance the scene. What doesn’t grow and evolve will eventually die.
Clout chasers seeking social media validation. I don’t think we should worry to much about these people. Actually the best thing is to pay them no mind and they’ll go away all on their own. Car culture and building is hard work anyone who’s been in the scene for a while knows the struggle of late nights and the busted knuckles. Laying on your back holding up a transmission trying to get the input shaft ligned up properly putting in and taking back out an engine because something didn’t go according to plan. Hot slag popping you on the neck and sizzling in your ear. The feeling and smell of your flesh burning on a hot exhaust or engine. Drilling out and taping holes because a bolt broke. That’s enough of a deterrent to keep the posers away as long as we don’t give them the attention they’re seeking!
This is just my opinion what do you guys think?
Hey everyone!! Idk if this is the place for this but I need some information!! I’m gonna be moving to Arizona in April and I’m just a bit curious on what the car scene is like down there. What are some good clubs to follow, good photo spots, etc. I live in Idaho rn and it’s alright (no offense to my ID people 😂) but I’ve heard Arizona is so much better!! Anything yall could give me would be greatly appreciated (especially popo wise, how mean are they??) thanks!!!
And here are some pics my friends took of my car at my work the other day for your viewing pleasure 😌
Show some love if yall feel so inclined! Got some fun stuff coming for the RA.
Hey everyone, wanted to stick my neck out here and talk about the franchise that got myself and probably several others into cars. It’s no secret that the films have took a turn for the worst, especially with the passing of Paul Walker and their pivot to nonsensical action and invincible characters. My question is, for those who have a sliver of investment still left after Fast X, how would you want the franchise to end? We know Fast 11 is coming but at a much slower pace than expected after reports of budget cuts and a complete reshuffling of production. It’s reportedly slated for April 2027. Vin Diesel has stated the final film will return to LA, refocus on car culture and “reunite Dom and Brian O’Conner.” My concern is, how do you do this? How do you scale down this final film? Especially when they’ve blown everything so…
Honestly, After Furious 7, no matter how much I tried to stay invested, it just started to feel increasingly watered down. The stakes got bigger, the set pieces got louder, but the heart of what made the franchise special slowly faded out.
The early films worked because they were grounded in car culture, relationships, and relatively believable consequences. Even when things were exaggerated, there was still a sense of scale and intimacy. By the time we got past 7, it felt like the series shifted fully into spectacle for spectacle’s-sake less about the cars, the culture, and the people, and more about topping the previous explosion.
Furious 7 felt like a natural and emotionally honest stopping point. Brian’s send-off was handled with restraint and respect, and it gave the franchise a rare moment of closure that most long running series never get. Everything after that has felt more like obligation than evolution like the story kept going because it financially could, not because it narratively should.
I still check in out of curiosity and respect for what the franchise once was, but I’ve never been able to reconnect with it the same way. It’s hard to recreate authenticity once the scale gets that far removed from its roots.
What’s one trend in car culture right now that you actually love — and one you’re ready to see fade out?
This is perhaps more of a trend in the automotive industry, but I like how manufacturers have started having some fun again and offering manual transmission options. Toyota undoubtedly is a leading example but aren’t the only ones. A trend I’m not entirely fond of though is tied with the very thing I like, and that’s dealer mark ups and pricing out potential buyers with these cars. We all know the economy is rough and business is business but it’s ultimately going to kill sales for these models. Likely there’s several people out there who would love to jump into a MK5 Supra, Nissan Z or even a new S650 Mustang but simply can’t fork over what some dealers are standing by. Low sales unfortunately means low interest in continuing to produce from these manufacturers. Not the first time this has happened and definitely won’t be the last as long as dealers are involved.

I really miss driving my Silvia but the Alaskan weather has different plans, how cold is it where yall are at?
Whoa! Not Alaska cold 🫣
We’ve had the typical bipolar weather here in Texas. Kinda disappointing. My car is awd and I was really looking forward to a lil ice
I want to wish everyone a happy and joyful merry Christmas, hope everyone got to spend time with family and or friends on the holiday and got what they wanted from Santa 😉, if yall have kiddos I hope they will enjoy this every year till the time comes to have there own family(I have two boys), it’s not so much about the toys it’s more spending time with one another and that what makes the holidays special even more.
I wish everyone a merry Christmas!!!!! (New by the way) 🫶🏼😅
Hey everyone sorry I have been missing on here allot lately I’m really been going through a really rough time and I really been trying to deal with it but I’m slipping very hard with home and the army and it’s just not getting better allot of my car life and other things have been put on pause and trying to build myself back up I promise to try to be a little more active and supportive with everyone here
We are here when you need us, that’s the point of this community. When you’re feeling down, we’re here to lift you back up! If you ever want or need to talk to Trevor, Chris, myself or any of the chapter captains personally, you can DM directly and we will absolutely respond.
Any recommendations on detailing spray?
I been using maguires last touch detailer. Been working good for me but wanna know what others are using

Just arrived in the mail and I am geeking out! I'm so stoked to get this open!
Sometimes the best memories are made just hanging out in the garage with your buddies.
One of the best feelings is when you get a random compliment on your car in a parking lot when you’re out getting groceries 🤣
I love the "you're on the wrong side of the car" or just people pointing from the other lane or behind me in traffic 😂
No, it's not my birthday. However! I just had a MASSIVE shipment delivered to my house of a bunch of car products. I ordered them all decently spaced apart, some spanning over a week in between, but everything arrived together around noon today and I'm geaking out like a child on christmas morning. We're talking like 2 full body wraps, banner wrap, decals, new sparco racing seat, braum harness bar, sparco racing harness, a bluetooth lighting control panel, Perrin transmission oil cooler.... the list keeps going.
Im so stoked and dont even know where to start with this.
I also just ordered a set of new custom headlights, but that'll be 6-8 weeks before I can expect them.
Welp, time to get to work!

So, due to a recent work injury, I'm on bed rest for roughly a week. Herniated spinal disks are no joke, let me tell 'ya!
I'm on day 2 of this bed rest and I'm already going stir crazy. What do I do to keep myself distracted while stuck here? Research.
So let's talk cars! I haven't put the laptop away as I constantly dive into deep research of modifications and getting new ideas.
So far, not including what Ive already planned on doing, this is a short list of upcoming modifications that I plan to work on.
Braum Racing Harness Bar
Sparco R100 Racing Seat
Honestly, have you ever considered asking chat got? It sounds stupid, but if you put a picture in there and ask itll give you a ton of options!
DIY paint and wrap jobs - worth it or nah?

Wrapped this myself and took about 6 months. (I lost all motivation and it got too cold.) If you have the patience, its worth it. Would i do it again? No. I understand why people charge $2k+ 😂💀
Duuuuddee winter is approaching faster than I want, buuuutttt.....I do have major plans for the winter. Muly bank account gonna be asking for mercy once I'm done lol
Do we have any one else that lives here in SoCal that want to start meeting up and get this SoCal chapter going?
Let me know.
Hey @Everyone I’m new black card member you can call me PowerRage or (Rage) for short I have a 17 subaru sti hot wheels acceleracers clone of the PowerRage car 80% done with the build you can hit me up for anything you can check my YouTube channel out more videos too come

How many different colors body panels have you had on your car at once ? For me its 6 free is free especially when you use to bacon your fenders or destroy your bumper often.
I wish I still had a picture of my 74 Chevy truck that I had. It was seven different colors and none of them were cool.😂
It had the fender off a 72. The hood from a 73. The cab was the 74 and I’ll be honest I don’t know what you’re the bed was from.
Truck was sitting on almost 12 inches of lift with 44 inch tires and a 600 hp 383 stroker my license plate said Frkstin
Picked up a NIB 40yo Alpine X-over and a couple 3’ Stinger RCA’s from ‘98. This should be the last of the processing I’ll need on the system revamp. Makes one wonder…. Why aren’t big systems cool anymore?
Actually works! No noise or anything, and x-over functions all seem to work
Welp it got me this morning . Not how I wanted to start my Tuesday…. I’m hoping this gets fixed asap!!! 😩😩😩😩
Today marks day 4 of our trip to Alaska. We officially passed the 1000 mile mark without any issues at all. I must say the Silvia is surprisingly comfortable and even after driving 500+ miles at once I didn’t feel very uncomfortable other than sweaty 😆. We stopped in Prince George for the night and today we drive another 450 miles to a tiny and remote camp called Bell 2. We plan on crossing the border back to Alaska by Thursday. I post more pics in some scenic locations later on!
Idk if it’s just cause I am who I am, but I do look at my flaws and get sad. Then I get dumb as hell and make jokes about it, or do backyard garage shit to it til I repair it. I remember one time I had someone hit my Evo on the rear bumper, and I found the largest damn bandaid I could find that was god awful ugly and threw it on the spot. Was for shits and giggles, I even won a trophy at a show with it on the car. I just try to keep my head up even in the rough spots with my car.
Currently he’s ugly as holy fuck, fuck I can already see how he will look in the next couple months in my head. So I ain’t buggin
