What’s your feelings on the Toyota Supra MK5/A90?
Not a Toyota Supra owner myself, but have had seat time in both the MK4 and this new MK5 too. I think like many others, I grew up watching The Fast and The Furious along with consuming video games and other media that featured the Supra. It was THE car in my mind, and I still love it as an adult. I love imports quite a bit. But this took a twist back in 2019 when I was in college and the long rumored MK5 hit the streets with its controversial makeup. I think most, including me, were disappointed to learn this new Supra wasn’t going to have the traditional Toyota touch, instead opting for the BMW B58 with only a ZF auto 8 speed trans. (I’ve really never been a big German/BMW fan). But I realize now that was Toyota’s only option to bring back the Supra for a semi affordable cost. However, car journalists and enthusiasts alike were struggling to find the right feelings for the car. I personally was lukewarm on it until I first saw one in person finally in December 2019 and it really changed my mind on the car. The Supra’s appearance looked awkward and stubby on camera/pictures and publications whereas it was beautiful parked right in front of me. Sure I wasn’t a fan of the flat/angular interior mostly but the car looked great otherwise. Then not long after this I met a friend who hosted a local cars and coffee who had just purchased one. He immediately threw a bigger turbo on the car and was knocking on the door of 600+ which was pretty impressive to me. This was still fairly early in the car’s life cycle too so mods and other parts were still rolling out as people tested what the car was capable of. Once we became better friends he thew me the keys and let me feel the car out. Besides the poor visibility and awkward roof line, the car and it’s undeniable German internals really impressed me. The only thing I felt it lacked was at least an option for a 6 speed manual, which Toyota undoubtedly got bullied into developing later. I haven’t had the pleasure to try a manual transmission MK5 Supra but I’ve heard the gearing change and manual really bring the car to life in way it never was before. To conclude my ramblings, it’s been impressive to see what people have been doing with these cars. I’m really curious to see how their values hold now that they are discontinued. Will they soar in price eventually like the the MK4s of the past? How will servicing/getting parts for these cars be like in another 10 years and beyond? Would love to know some of your thoughts about the car. Ultimately, I’ve been very impressed with the car and would honestly be interested in owning one with a 6 speed, although the 8 speed auto is undeniably smooth and very quick.

Hey there friend. Completely agree with all that you said. Currently owner of a 2026 3.0 supra in nocturnal black and do not regret it a bit. I’ve always wanted an MK4 and hopefully one day I can have the pleasure of owning both. First impression performance wise, the handling is really good and after breaking it and being able to full send it was more than what I expected it to be. It’s also my daily and even living in NJ and going through the blizzard we just had, handled fairly well (with good winter tires). I’ve definitely seen a lot of awesome builds for it whether it’s for show or racing. For the price point it was a good deal for me. Though it’s not the “Toyota” it’s supposed to be, honestly, the B58 is just as easily tunable. I haven’t done much to mine yet, just an exhaust and intake but do have more plans on focusing more on performance. Currently just collecting parts and enjoying it before my warranty expires haha.
