📌 Welcome to Garage Therapy

Sometimes the best mod is just clearing your head.

This group is built for those moments in between the wrenching and racing — when you just need to talk it out, vent a little, or remind yourself why you fell in love with this culture in the first place.

Whether you’re deep in a 2 a.m. garage spiral, fighting off burnout, or riding high off a perfect weekend cruise — this space is for you.

What’s something you had to learn the hard way because nobody taught you?

Could be:

• A repair you messed up

• Buying the wrong parts

• Trusting the wrong advice

• Thinking something would be “easy” 😅

Oh! Definately learned how hard it is to diagnose an electrical issue. But turns out was just an old battery! A shitty running car can be because of a bad battery or alternator going out. A low voltage going to fuel pump and injectors, going to ecu, and coils, and all the sensors will wreak havok trying to figure out issues. A good way to see whats what is to see amp draw off the battery, and actual voltage when the car is running. 14.1v+ is great! Below that, you gonna have issues

Tell me about a time your car almost broke you.

Not a small issue — I’m talking:

The moment you considered selling it, quitting, or walking away completely.

What happened… and why didn’t you quit?

This was several years ago now,but... bo less painful....

I was doing a new car audio competition build in my MK1 focus and between my best friend and I we spent 100 hours in one week on this rebuild.

We cut the spair tire well out and welded in a battery box to hold 4 90lb group 31 agm batteries. Re-wired the entire vehicle..

Installed 100 square feet more of sound deadener..

Filled every crevas with expanded foam..

Redesigned my false floor..

Designed and welded a new amplifier rack...

Re apolstered all of the buety panels..

Then spend 2 days running every wire, every panel, every screw so it would be absolutely perfect in every way..

At 1am the first day of the largest car audio comp of the year I turn the key to test the entire system and my 2800 dollar sub amplifier promptly catches on fire....

I put the fire out and sat in a lawn chair crying..

If it were not for my best friend I was absolutely going to abandon the car and never touch it again..

Cherish your real friends folks!

What’s the most defeating moment when working on your car?

• Fixing something and it still doesn’t work

• Breaking something else in the process

• Realizing the problem is bigger than you thought

• Running out of time or money mid-project

We all hit that moment where we just sit there like 😐

What’s the best feeling moment when working on your car?

• First start after a big repair

• Finally fixing a problem you chased for weeks

After comparing myself to other people’s builds from Integras to skylines, and after getting rid of both of them I realized that I should’ve been more grateful/appreciative with the work, time, and money I’ve spent and done with the cars. And that I should’ve stop telling myself in the past “You’re at a good state and good area, where you have these cars at a young age”

I hope everyone is having a fantastic day remember some one out there loves u an cares about you

Organizing the garage, getting some stuff up on the walls and been looking into refinishing the floor so that is super noice.

What is the worst part about your build, and what has been the most rewarding?

I think the worst part of the build on the driftcar, is the Aces EFI system that’s on it I’m still figuring out how to navigate the programming, and sort through the previous owners poor execution of wiring and exhaust routing and other things. BUT. Since I got it up and running, that sweet sweet slap of that cam makes a fella happy.

Forgetting to tighten down the top of the torch on the acetylene torch. 😬

It’s getting chilly

As the weather gets colder we all know the motivation begins to lack when it comes to getting your ass in the garage and getting to work. What helps motivate you to get out there and start wrenchin?

First of all, a heater in the garage helps a TON. Just saying! Personally I don't love extremely hot or cold weather. So spring is usually chaos trying to get things I ordered at Christmas installed and wrap up any winter projects to get ready for the first car meet of the year and fall is when I get to actually enjoy being in the garage working on and installing all the parts I've collected over the summer. Being on a budget usually, it can sometimes make progress feel painfully slow. But spending the summer collecting parts and making plans and then being able to make some big moves when the weather gets tolerable is a really good feeling.

I've got vinyl in hand that needs to go on my roof, some tint that needs installed, fog lights ready to go on, some stereo upgrades to make, and a set of wheels to refinish this fall/winter and I'm more than a little anxious to get in the garage and do it!

Hallowed Ground

The question was posed a while back, "What is your garage to you? How do you see that space?" Well, I've never been good at short answers and this is no exception so please bear with me. If you'll indulge a longer post, I'd like to tell some of my story and share some thoughts I've been mulling over and sorting out for the last few weeks.

Here goes...

Growing up, my younger brother and I spent countless hours in the garage shoulder to shoulder with my Dad and grandfathers and uncles doing everything from a timing belt on Mom's Dodge Grand Caravan to a transmission swap on Dad's Mazda MX-3 to learning to adjust carburetor jets on Grandpa Dave's '57 Chevy coupe. We built small block Chevy motors for my uncle's dirt track cars and tuned up boat motors and built and modified go-karts. The list could go on…

lemme hear it - what is the most annoying thing you have broken while trying to wrench for clarity? Only to find yourself more upset.

Exhaust bolts in general due to rust (thanks NJ). Also, brake lines (incl. broken hard lines), same issue, and bleeding brakes is always a pain, especially when alone. I love upgrading brakes, but broke a bolt that held my caliper together once, drilling that out and re-tapping it, not fun

What’s a “therapy drive” spot you swear by when you just need to clear your head?

In Ohio, 10/10 the back country roads through Waynesville. In Canada, Waverly Road in NS (name speaks for itself) lol

What are a couple must play garage songs that are therapeutic for you? Something that makes you either feel big feelings or makes all your feelings fake away. Whatever calms the storm in your mind as it drowns out in the background.

I love punk and hardcore, but for me it's a nostalgia thing of having classic rock on, as that's what always plays when I'm at my dad's wrenching away

Happy Monday - i hope

When you see “Garage Therapy” what do you think of? What is your hope to get out of being a part of this discussion board? I wanna hear about why it is you found yourself in this group.

More like what do I have sitting on my work bench that I'm too lazy to install right now lol

Ughhh 😪

So been waiting almost 3 months for my custom vertex bumper to be finished and painted.. painter is dragging his feet but can’t say much because he’s doing it for free along with my new widebody fenders.. but damn 🥲 he’s had my bumper almost 3 weeks. Keeps telling me the end of this week.. well we’re coming up on 4 weeks and now it’s Monday he will get to them with my fenders. I have a show in 8 days I thought I’d be more than prepared for and finished with paint. But uhhh.. 😬 just loosing steam on the car. I thought I’d make it into one showcase with her this year but not looking like it. None of my friends care about this kind of thing, it’s all hair and nails for them so they don’t understand the disappointment I have for not only myself but my…

Keep your head up and just keep grinding I know the waiting game sucks but once it’s finished your whole attitude will change and you will be killing it!

Well folks... This one got me today. Full-blown panic when I got an email from my wife while I was working saying, "Call me right now." She's 29 weeks pregnant and had our 5-year-old son in the car with her on their way to an ultrasound appointment when they were rear-ended by a teenager driving aggressively in a one-lane construction zone. Officers and the trucker who stopped as a witness said impact was around 50 mph while my wife was completely stopped for traffic. And I believe it. The trunk floor is shoved all the way forward into the rear sub-frame and diff and both trailing arms are bent badly. It'll be a right-off I'm sure.

Enough about the car though. My boy was checked out on the scene and cleared by paramedics and went home with my best friend who dropped everything (bless the man) and rushed to help…
